Study Tour to Finland

1.       Itinerary

The following itinerary is proposed:

 

Monday, August 31st

Departure Zagreb Helsinki

Bus collects the participants from Helsinki-Vantaa airport and travels to Hotel Helka. Participants freshen up, unpack etc.

 

Tuesday, September 1st   

 

08:30 Departure from Hotel to Häme Regional Environment Centre in Hämeenlinna

 

10:00 Häme Regional Environment Centre: Presentations on permitting and inspection processes in Finland, Ekokem hazardous waste incineration plant as a case. Topics: Permitting for industrial plants, communication between permitting authorities and industrial plants, public participation, site inspections.

 

12:30-13:30 Lunch at Häme Regional Environment Centre and bus journey to Ekokem incineration plant in Riihimäki.

               

14:00 Tour of the Ekokem followed by presentation from Ekokem Managing Director regarding compliance with Environmental Legislation, changes/improvements made with advancing legislation, difficulties encountered, etc. Ekokem's expertise encompasses the incineration of hazardous organic wastes such as PCB’s, obsolete pesticides and other chlorinated compounds which we have completed for customers from over 30 countries all over the world. In addition, Ekokem's services include among others, the physico-chemical treatment of inorganic waste, the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater and the treatment of fluorescent tubes.

 

16:00 Depart to Helsinki, evening free.

Wednesday, September 2nd

 

08:30 Depart Hotel to Neste Oil refinery in Porvoo.

 

10:00 Tour of Neste Oil refinery.

The site is a highly integrated, efficient facility comprising an oil refinery, an extensive tank farm and underground storage unit, a harbor, and a technology center. The Porvoo refinery, which was commissioned in 1965, is one of the versatile and modern in Europe. A presentation will be given by the refinery staff regarding the compliance with Environmental Legislation, development of emergency response systems, changes/improvements made with advancing legislation, difficulties encountered, etc.

 

12:30-13:30 Lunch at Neste Oil refinery

 

14:00 Visit to the Emergency Response Unit in Porvoo.

 

16:00 Free time in Porvoo, return to Helsinki

Thursday, September 3rd

 

09:30 Presentation by SYKE staff. Topics include: Introduction to SYKE, Background, Roles and Responsibilities, Main Areas of Activity, IPPC and SEVESO.

 

11:30 Lunch in SYKE followed by bus journey to a power plant in Helsinki.

 

13:00 – 16.30 Tour of Salmisaari (coal) and/or Vuosaari (natural gas) power plants. Salmisaari and Vuosaari plants are regulated to both IPPC and Seveso II. A presentation will be given by power plant staff regarding compliance with Environmental Legislation, changes/improvements made with advancing legislation, difficulties encountered, etc.

Friday, September 4th

 

09:30 Presentation by SYKE Director General, Lea Kauppi and Development Manager Ms. Tea Törnroos

 

11:30 Lunch In SYKE followed by bus journey to visit to VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland in Espoo.

 

13:30 Presentations at VTT

 

19:00 Dinner hosted by SYKE.
